SpaceX Plans ‘Starpipe’ Gas Pipeline to Power Next Generation of Starship Launches

SpaceX is preparing to build an 8-mile (13-kilometre) natural gas pipeline, dubbed “Starpipe,” to supply fuel directly to its Starbase launch facility in Texas as the company accelerates plans to dramatically increase the launch frequency of its next-generation Starship rocket. According to Reuters, regulatory filings submitted to the Texas Railroad Commission show that construction is expected to begin next month, with the pipeline targeted to enter service by January 2027, replacing the current practice of transporting fuel by tanker trucks.

Starship, the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, uses approximately 630,000 gallons (2.4 million litres) of liquid methane for each launch. Reuters reported that the existing process of trucking methane to Starbase is too slow and inefficient to support Elon Musk’s long-term vision of conducting dozens, and eventually hundreds, of launches annually. Engineering documents also indicate that SpaceX plans to construct an on-site liquefaction facility, allowing natural gas delivered through Starpipe to be converted into liquid methane for rocket propellant.

The pipeline project forms part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to gain greater control over its supply chain. Reuters’ review of land records found that the company has secured more than 100 oil and gas leases in Texas and is exploring future natural gas production and processing operations. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell recently confirmed that the company intends to build its own fuel infrastructure as it scales Starship to support expanding Starlink deployments, lunar missions under NASA’s Artemis programme, and future crewed missions to Mars.

For the global space industry, Starpipe highlights how SpaceX is extending its vertical integration strategy beyond aerospace into energy infrastructure. Analysts say securing a dedicated fuel supply could significantly reduce operational costs, improve launch efficiency, and support the high-frequency launch cadence needed for future commercial space operations. As Starship moves closer to full-scale deployment, investments in supporting infrastructure such as Starpipe are expected to play a pivotal role in advancing SpaceX’s long-term ambitions in satellite communications, deep-space exploration, and interplanetary travel.
