South Africa’s Pepkor Completes $98 Million Acquisition of Retailability Brands

South African retail giant Pepkor Holdings Limited has finalized the acquisition of key brands under Retailability Group in a deal valued at approximately $98 million, marking a major expansion in its fashion retail portfolio.

In a statement released on Thursday, Pepkor confirmed that the acquisition includes Edgars, Legit, and Style, three of South Africa’s well-known apparel chains. The move strengthens Pepkor’s presence in the value fashion segment and aligns with its strategy to consolidate its footprint across Southern Africa.

“This acquisition enhances our ability to serve customers with affordable, quality clothing and supports our long-term growth vision,” said Pepkor CEO Leon Lourens, emphasizing that the integration process has been structured to ensure business continuity and protect existing jobs.

As reported by Business Insider Africa, the acquisition follows regulatory approval by South Africa’s Competition Commission earlier this year. Analysts from Bloomberg noted that Pepkor’s latest move is part of a broader trend among South African retailers seeking scale advantages amid rising input costs and weaker consumer spending.

The acquisition is expected to contribute positively to Pepkor’s earnings from the 2026 financial year, underscoring the company’s strategic push to maintain its leadership in Africa’s competitive retail sector.
