South Africa’s Coega green ammonia project selects Topsoe in $1bn clean energy deal

South Africa’s Coega green ammonia project has selected Danish engineering company Topsoe for a deal valued at about $1 billion, marking a major step forward in Africa’s emerging green hydrogen and clean fuels industry. The agreement was announced by project developers and energy officials, according to Reuters.

The Coega project, located in the Eastern Cape province, is designed to produce green ammonia using renewable energy sources and green hydrogen technology. Officials said the partnership with Topsoe will support technology deployment, engineering solutions, and industrial development needed to scale production for export and domestic industrial use.

Green ammonia is increasingly viewed as a critical component of the global energy transition because it can be used as a low-carbon fuel, hydrogen carrier, and industrial feedstock. South Africa has been positioning itself as a potential global hub for green hydrogen and related clean energy products due to its renewable energy potential, industrial base, and strategic shipping location.

Analysts say the Coega development could attract additional international investment into Africa’s clean energy sector while supporting industrialisation and export diversification. They note that projects linked to green hydrogen, ammonia, and renewable fuels are becoming central to long-term energy strategies as countries seek alternatives to fossil fuels and lower-carbon industrial supply chains.
