Princess Opeyemi Bright: The British-Nigerian Trailblazer Making History as UK’s Youngest Mayor

At just 29 years old, Princess Opeyemi Bright has carved her name into the annals of British history as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom.

Officially sworn in on May 16, 2025, as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, this British-Nigerian changemaker is not just breaking records, she’s reshaping perceptions of leadership, identity, and youth involvement in politics.

Born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, Princess Bright’s story is deeply rooted in heritage, service, and ambition. Her political journey began at the age of 22 when she was first elected as a councillor, a role she approached with a deep sense of duty.

Over the years, she has become a staunch advocate for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunity, particularly within one of London’s most diverse boroughs.

Princess Bright’s commitment to public service is more than personal, it’s generational. Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney from 2006 to 2007, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a respected minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. Raised in a home where faith, leadership, and community engagement were deeply valued, Opeyemi inherited a powerful legacy of public impact and spiritual resilience.

At her inauguration, she humbly acknowledged the divine orchestration of her journey:

This is nothing short of God’s grace,” she stated. “I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”

Her mayoral tenure promises to reflect her values; unity, inclusivity, and progress. One of her immediate goals is to strengthen community bonds while celebrating the cultural diversity of Barking and Dagenham.

She has also pledged to champion two charities that are deeply personal to her: Ab Phab Youth Club, which offers inclusive services for young people with disabilities, and Crohn’s & Colitis UK, a nod to her own journey with Crohn’s disease.

Princess Bright’s ascent marks more than just a political win, it’s part of a larger narrative of African excellence on the global stage.

She joins a growing list of Nigerians making history in public service, alongside figures like UK Secretary of State Kemi Badenoch, Labour MP Chi Onwurah, Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and U.S. Congresswoman Esther Agbaje. Each of these leaders represents the dynamism and determination of a new generation of global Africans, redefining what is possible.

In Princess Bright, the UK gains more than a young mayor, it gains a symbol of integrity, courage, and multicultural strength. Her story is a beacon to youth across the diaspora, proving that leadership has no age limit, and heritage is not a boundary but a foundation.

As she steps into this new chapter, Princess Opeyemi Bright is not only making history, she’s making room for others to follow.
