Pentagon accelerates AI push with classified deals involving seven tech giants

The Pentagon has signed agreements with seven leading artificial intelligence companies to deploy their technologies across classified military systems, marking a major escalation in the U.S. military’s adoption of AI. The deals, announced in May 2026, are designed to strengthen decision-making capabilities and operational efficiency in complex combat environments, as reported by AP News.

The agreements include partnerships with Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, OpenAI, Nvidia, SpaceX, and startup Reflection AI. Their tools will be integrated into secure defence networks to support tasks such as logistics planning, target identification, and battlefield analysis.

Officials say the move is part of a broader strategy to transform the U.S. military into what it describes as an “AI-first fighting force,” reducing reliance on single vendors while accelerating deployment timelines from years to months, as highlighted by Reuters. The Pentagon has also committed tens of billions of dollars toward AI-related defence initiatives, including autonomous systems and advanced data infrastructure, The Guardian noted.

However, the deals have sparked ethical and industry tensions. AI firm Anthropic declined to participate over concerns about unrestricted military use of its technology and was subsequently excluded from Pentagon systems, highlighting ongoing debates around AI governance, surveillance, and autonomous weapons.

The agreements underscore a global race among major powers to integrate AI into defence capabilities, with analysts noting that such partnerships could redefine modern warfare while raising complex questions about oversight, accountability.
