Ogun Governor Clarifies Oil Exploration Status, Says Commercial Drilling Not Yet Underway

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has clarified the status of oil exploration in the state, dismissing reports that commercial drilling has commenced. Speaking during a road commissioning event in Ijebu‑Ode, the governor stressed that exploration work is being conducted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on behalf of the federal government, not by the state, ThisDay reported.

Abiodun noted that hydrocarbon traces were discovered in areas such as Tongeji Island, prompting preliminary investigations. He emphasised that while findings indicate potential, commercial viability has not yet been confirmed, and residents should disregard circulating claims that crude extraction has started.

The governor also addressed concerns about alleged misappropriation of exploration funds, describing such claims as misleading. He reiterated that the state has no control over federal exploration finances and confirmed that current activities are limited to assessment and feasibility studies, according to ThisDay.

Highlighting security measures around the exploration sites, Abiodun said a naval base has been established at Tongeji Island to protect national assets. He also pointed to ongoing federal projects, including the Olokola Deep Seaport, which he said would enhance the state’s economic development.
