Naomi Osaka Stuns World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to Reach First Wimbledon Quarterfinal

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) to secure her first-ever place in the quarterfinals at the All England Club. According to Reuters, the victory marks Osaka’s maiden Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance and her first quarterfinal at a Grand Slam outside the hard courts since returning to the WTA Tour after becoming a mother. The result also ends Sabalenka’s bid for a maiden Wimbledon title and blows the women’s draw wide open.

Seeded 14th, Osaka dominated the opening set with aggressive baseline play before holding her nerve in the second-set tiebreak, ending Sabalenka’s remarkable streak of 21 consecutive Grand Slam tiebreak victories. Speaking after the match, Osaka described Centre Court as a special place and said the win ranked among the most enjoyable moments of her comeback. The Japanese star also credited her mother’s home-cooked meals for helping fuel her performances throughout the tournament.

The victory was particularly significant as Osaka avenged her straight-sets defeat to Sabalenka in the fourth round of the French Open just weeks earlier. Having lost all three meetings against the Belarusian earlier in 2026, Osaka finally reversed the rivalry with a composed display that extended her unbeaten run at Wimbledon without dropping a set. She will next face Karolína Muchová for a place in the semifinals.

For women’s tennis, Osaka’s triumph reshapes the race for the Wimbledon title and reinforces her return as a genuine Grand Slam contender. Analysts say her resurgence, combined with the early exits of several top seeds, has transformed the championship into one of the most unpredictable editions in recent years, guaranteeing another first-time women’s singles champion at Wimbledon.
