Mukwandi Chibesakunda is redefining banking leadership in Zambia. As the Chief Executive Officer of Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZANACO) since November 2020, and the first woman to hold the position, she has positioned the bank as a catalyst for financial inclusion, innovation, and corporate governance. Her influence extends well beyond the boardroom, reflecting a commitment to transforming not only institutions but also communities.
Born in Lusaka in December 1970, Mukwandi grew up with a strong emphasis on education, resilience, and discipline. She pursued a degree in Economics at the University of Zambia before furthering her studies in Business Administration at Manchester Business School and earning her MBA through the Alliance Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom. She also enhanced her leadership credentials through executive programs at INSEAD and Harvard Business School.
Her career spans more than thirty years across institutions including Standard Chartered, Stanbic, the Bank of Zambia, Access Bank, and NATSAVE, where she served as Managing Director. At NATSAVE she began driving digital transformation and broadening financial outreach to underserved areas. When she joined ZANACO as CEO, she brought with her a reputation for innovation and inclusivity, setting the tone for a new era in Zambian banking.
Her leadership has earned her widespread recognition. In 2021, Africa Leadership Magazine named her African Female Leader of the Year, while the Gender Mainstream Awards in South Africa honored her as Most Inclusive Leader in Zambia, according to coverage by Africa Leadership Magazine. In 2023 and 2024, she was named Zambia CEO of the Year by the Zambia Institute of Banking and Financial Services and the Bankers Association of Zambia, as reported by ZANACO’s corporate communications. In 2024, she also received the Best Overall Corporate Governance Individual Award from the Zambia Institute of Directors, and that same year the Zambia Women Judges Association recognized her among the nation’s most exceptional leaders.
Mukwandi’s influence extends beyond banking. According to Equilar’s executive leadership records, she serves on the board of Copperbelt Energy Corporation and contributes to organizations focused on higher education financing, risk management, and institutional governance. These roles underline her broader impact across key sectors of Zambia’s economy.
Her philosophy is grounded in the belief that education is the great equalizer and that financial inclusion must reach women, rural populations, and small businesses. She has consistently advocated for governance structures that build trust and transparency, ensuring that banking delivers tangible results for everyday people.
Mukwandi Chibesakunda’s story is one of trailblazing leadership, resilience, and vision. By breaking barriers, earning continental recognition, and championing inclusive growth, she has redefined what it means to lead in Zambia’s financial sector. Her journey continues to inspire a generation of leaders determined to balance performance with purpose.
