Morocco has declared a new national holiday to commemorate the recent United Nations resolution reaffirming the kingdom’s autonomy plan as the most credible framework for resolving the Western Sahara dispute.
The announcement was made following a cabinet meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI in Rabat, where the government praised the resolution as a “historic diplomatic victory” for Morocco and a testament to growing international recognition of its sovereignty over the territory.
Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said the holiday will be observed annually to celebrate “national unity and territorial integrity,” noting that the UN’s stance aligns with positions previously expressed by key allies, including the United States, France, and Spain.
As reported by Reuters and Morocco World News, the resolution’s passage marks a significant milestone in Morocco’s decades-long effort to consolidate international support for its autonomy proposal. The move is also seen as bolstering Rabat’s regional influence and reinforcing its diplomatic outreach across Africa and the Arab world.
