Meet Thando Thabethe The Voice and Face Transforming South African Media

Thando Thabethe is a South African actress, radio personality, television host, entrepreneur, and media powerhouse whose influence across broadcasting and entertainment has positioned her among the most recognizable personalities in African media. Known for her commanding presence on radio, acclaimed acting performances, and growing entrepreneurial ventures, she has built a multifaceted career that continues to shape contemporary entertainment culture in South Africa.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Thando Thabethe developed an early passion for performance and media. She attended Mondeor High School before graduating from the University of Johannesburg with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting. While at university, she became involved in theatre productions and started her broadcasting journey at UJFM, where she worked as a news reader and later as a radio presenter, laying the foundation for her future media career.

Her acting breakthrough came through roles in South African television productions including Generations: The Legacy, Housekeepers, and My Perfect Family. She later gained continental recognition for her performances in Netflix productions such as How to Ruin Christmas, where her portrayal earned widespread acclaim and strengthened her position as one of South Africa’s leading actresses.

Beyond acting, Thando became a dominant force in radio broadcasting. After building experience at YFM and 5FM, she joined 947 as the host of 947 Drive with Thando, one of South Africa’s leading drive time radio shows. Her success on air earned her major industry recognition, including winning the Best Afternoon Drive Presenter Award and Best Afternoon Drive Show Award at the South African Radio Awards in 2022.

Her achievements across media and entertainment have continued to grow steadily. In 2019, she was named among Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30, recognizing her growing influence in media and entertainment. In 2023, she won the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her performance in How to Ruin Christmas. She was also recognized as the Coolest Radio Personality by the Sunday Times GenNext Awards and became the only female nominee at the South African Radio Awards that same year.

Outside traditional media, Thando Thabethe has expanded into entrepreneurship through her shapewear and lingerie brand, Thabooty’s, reflecting her growing business influence and lifestyle branding appeal. She has additionally hosted major events including the South African Film and Television Awards and served as the first African brand ambassador for Nivea.

In recent years, her impact within fashion and popular culture has continued to rise. In 2025, she received GLAMOUR South Africa’s Most Glamorous Media Personality Award, recognizing her influence across fashion, beauty, and entertainment media.
