Laurie Wiid van Heerden’s journey is rooted in a hands-on approach to design and manufacturing. Born in Cape Town in 1987, he trained through apprenticeships rather than traditional academic pathways, working with a carpenter and at the Bronze Age Foundry under renowned sculptor Wim Botha. These formative experiences shaped his deep respect for materials, craftsmanship, and process, laying the foundation for a design philosophy that merges traditional techniques with modern innovation.

In 2013, he founded Wiid Design, a studio that has since become globally recognized for its experimental use of materials particularly cork. His work has pushed boundaries in product design, achieving world firsts such as the largest cork pendant light and cork cabinet, and earning recognition as an African ambassador for cork by global producer Amorim. His creations span furniture, lighting, ceramics, and collectible objects, each piece reflecting a balance between artistry, function, and material exploration.
Laurie Wiid van Heerden’s impact has been reinforced through international exhibitions and industry recognition. His work has been showcased at leading global platforms including Design Miami, Design Days Dubai, and 100% Design London. He has received multiple awards, including the Design Foundation Maker to Market Award in 2013, the Conde Nast House and Garden Award for Production Excellence in 2014, Best Lighting Design Award in 2015 and 2019, the Arts and Culture Trust ImpACT Award in 2015, and the Brave Award in 2017 for his contribution to social initiatives.
