Klaus Michael Kühne’s $44 Billion Fortune Set to Transform His Charitable Foundation

German logistics billionaire Klaus Michael Kühne has died at 89, leaving behind a vast business empire and a succession plan that will transfer control of his wealth to the Kühne Foundation, the charitable institution he established with his parents in 1976. Forbes estimated his fortune at $41.9 billion earlier this year, while Reuters reported holdings worth more than $44.2 billion at the time of his death.

Kühne and his wife Christine had no children, meaning there are no direct descendants to inherit his business empire. His long prepared succession arrangement provides for Kühne Holding AG, which controls his major investments, to pass to the foundation. The holding company owned about 55.4% of Kühne + Nagel at the end of 2025, alongside significant interests in Hapag Lloyd and Lufthansa.

The transfer could dramatically increase the influence and financial resources of the foundation, which already ranks among Europe’s largest charitable institutions. Its work spans logistics, humanitarian aid, climate, medicine and culture, with around 800 employees operating programmes across dozens of countries. The foundation says its 2026 spending is expected to reach CHF65 million, excluding third party funding.

Kühne’s legacy therefore extends beyond the companies that made him one of Germany’s wealthiest people. By directing his fortune toward a foundation built around long term social investment, he has effectively converted a multibillion dollar family business legacy into a philanthropic institution with the potential to influence European logistics, healthcare, climate initiatives, education and culture for generations.
