Nigerian streaming platform Kava has expanded its catalogue to 125 titles and surpassed 100,000 subscribers about a year after launching, strengthening its position as a homegrown alternative in a rapidly changing Nollywood streaming market. Founded by Filmhouse Group’s Kene Okwuosa and Inkblot Productions’ Chinaza Onuzo, Kava launched in August 2025 with more than 30 Nollywood titles and has since built a wider catalogue of films and series for audiences in Nigeria and international markets, as reported by The Guardian.
The platform’s growth comes as the Nigerian streaming landscape undergoes a major reset. Netflix has reduced its investment in Nigerian productions, while Showmax was discontinued in March 2026 after years of operating in the market. Kava has moved into the resulting space by acquiring post cinema releases, exclusive titles and original productions, giving Nigerian filmmakers another commercial distribution channel at a time when the retreat of major international platforms has reduced competition for local content.
Kava’s model is built around global access to African stories, with the service currently available across more than 190 countries and on smart TVs, mobile devices, browsers and other connected platforms. It also offers offline downloads and continues to expand its Kava Originals slate, seeking to build a catalogue that goes beyond simply hosting films that have already completed their theatrical and international licensing windows.
The expansion gives Kava an important opportunity to become part of the infrastructure of Nigeria’s next streaming economy, but its long term success will depend on converting catalogue growth into sustained audience loyalty and stronger original programming. With international streamers scaling back their Nigerian ambitions, Kava has a rare opening to establish itself as a leading distribution platform for Nollywood, provided it can consistently deliver compelling films and series while creating commercially sustainable relationships with producers and rights holders.
