Kano DisCo Starts 10MW Solar Power Offtake from Haske Plant

Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has begun receiving a 10MW supply from the Haske Solar Power Plant as part of its strategy to build a more resilient distribution network. According to BusinessDay, the integration supports KEDCO’s “Safe Grid” initiative, which aims to provide stable electricity across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states while reducing dependence on the unreliable national grid.

The Haske Solar Plant, located in Kano’s Challawa Industrial Area, was commissioned in 2023 and remains Nigeria’s largest operational grid-connected solar facility. According to the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), the project was developed under a public–private partnership involving the federal government, Kano State, and Kumbotso Local Government.

KEDCO’s Safe Grid framework also draws on other embedded generation sources, including 16MW from the Tiga and Challawa hydro plants and a 20MW facility under construction with Utilita. According to BusinessDay, these projects collectively aim to stabilize supply for industrial and commercial customers across the region.

The move comes at a time when businesses in northern Nigeria face persistent power shortages that undermine productivity. According to EnergyDay Nigeria, KEDCO’s expansion into solar and hydro generation is expected to reduce reliance on diesel generators, lower costs for businesses, and boost competitiveness in key sectors such as agro-processing and manufacturing.

Analysts say the Haske solar integration highlights growing investor confidence in renewable energy in Nigeria. According to NSIA, the project not only strengthens Kano’s industrial hub but also signals the potential for wider adoption of clean energy in the country’s power sector.
