Israel Breaks 34‑Year Diplomatic Barrier With Historic Visit to Somaliland

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has made a historic official visit to Somaliland, marking the first time in over three decades that a senior Israeli diplomat has visited the self-declared republic since its 1991 bid for independence. The trip follows Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state on December 26, 2025, reshaping diplomatic dynamics in the Horn of Africa, according to Business Insider Africa.

In Hargeisa, Sa’ar met with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and other officials to discuss political, economic, and security cooperation. The discussions reportedly included steps toward full diplomatic relations, including ambassador appointments and embassy openings, as highlighted by Israelhayom.

Horntribune described the visit as a milestone for strengthening bilateral ties and attracting investment. President Abdullahi noted that the partnership could accelerate economic growth and social development in the territory.

The diplomatic breakthrough has sparked controversy. Somalia’s federal government condemned the visit, calling it a violation of its sovereignty, while the African Union urged Israel to revoke Somaliland’s recognition, reflecting regional opposition to the unilateral diplomatic move as reported by Reuters.
