The Indian Premier League (IPL) has surpassed a $20 billion business valuation for the first time, cementing its position as one of the world’s most valuable sports properties as billionaire investors continue to pour capital into franchise ownership. According to Bloomberg, the Twenty20 cricket league’s business value rose more than 11% year on year to $20.6 billion, while its standalone brand value increased 10.3% to $4.3 billion, according to the 2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study by investment bank Houlihan Lokey.
The latest valuation follows record breaking franchise transactions earlier this year, including the $1.78 billion acquisition of Royal Challengers Bengaluru by a consortium comprising Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, Aditya Birla Group and The Times Group, alongside the $1.65 billion purchase of Rajasthan Royals by investors including the Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla. Royal Challengers Bengaluru also became the first IPL franchise to exceed a $300 million brand valuation, reaching $312 million. “Franchise valuations have reached new highs, private capital participation has accelerated, and the league’s commercial ecosystem continues to diversify,” said Harsh Talikoti, Director at Houlihan Lokey.
The milestone underscores the IPL’s transformation into a year round global sports and entertainment business driven by lucrative broadcasting rights, sponsorships, merchandising and growing international audiences. For investors and the sports industry, the surge in valuations reflects strong confidence in premium sports assets with predictable revenue streams and expanding commercial opportunities. The league’s continued growth also reinforces India’s position as one of the world’s most influential sports and media markets.
Looking ahead, the IPL is expected to attract further institutional and private capital as franchise values continue to rise and international interest in cricket expands. With sustained growth in media rights, digital engagement and global fan participation, the league is well positioned to strengthen its standing among the world’s most valuable sporting competitions while creating new opportunities for investors, broadcasters and commercial partners.
