Google expands partnership with Intel for AI chips

Alphabet’s Google has expanded its long-standing partnership with Intel to advance artificial intelligence chip development and strengthen its cloud infrastructure, as demand for AI computing continues to surge globally. The multiyear agreement, announced on April 9, 2026, will see Google Cloud continue deploying Intel’s latest Xeon processors while deepening joint development of custom chips, as reported by MarketScreener.

The collaboration will focus on scaling AI workloads across data centres, with Intel’s Xeon 6 processors playing a central role in handling inference, cloud computing, and general-purpose tasks. The companies are also expanding co-development of infrastructure processing units, specialised chips designed to offload networking, storage, and security functions from CPUs, improving efficiency and performance at scale, according to Newsroom.

Intel executives said the partnership reflects a shift in AI demand from model training to deployment, where CPUs and complementary chips are increasingly critical. Google Cloud, which has relied on Intel processors for decades, is leveraging the collaboration to optimise its AI infrastructure, while Intel aims to strengthen its position in a market largely dominated by GPU-focused rivals.

The expanded alliance highlights intensifying competition in the global AI chip race, as tech giants invest heavily in custom silicon and diversified computing architectures. The move positions both companies to capture a larger share of enterprise AI spending, while reinforcing the strategic importance of hybrid chip ecosystems in powering next-generation digital economies.
