Google breaks ground on $15bn AI megahub in India, signaling major global infrastructure push

Google has officially begun construction of its largest artificial intelligence hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, marking a major milestone in the global race to build next-generation AI infrastructure. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in April 2026, launching a project valued at about $15 billion over five years, as reported by The Economic Times.

The development will centre on a gigawatt-scale data centre campus designed to support the massive computing demands of modern AI systems, including services such as Google Search and Gemini. Executives say the facility will form a “full-stack AI ecosystem,” combining data processing, cloud infrastructure, and advanced connectivity into a single integrated hub.

A key feature of the project is its role in strengthening global digital connectivity. The site is being positioned as an international subsea cable landing point, adding new routes beyond existing hubs in Mumbai and Chennai and improving the resilience of India’s internet backbone, according to company officials.

The investment underscores India’s rising importance in the global AI economy, with major tech firms increasingly building local infrastructure to meet surging demand for data storage and AI processing. For Google, the megahub represents a long-term strategic bet on emerging markets, where digital adoption, talent, and scale are converging to shape the future of artificial intelligence.
