Gilbert Asante: The Visual Alchemist Redefining Africa’s Creative Identity

From Accra to the world, the celebrated photographer and creative director is crafting powerful images that frame African excellence with global elegance.

In an industry where imagery often shapes perception long before words are spoken, Gilbert Asante has become one of the most influential visual storytellers of his generation. The Ghanaian-born photographer and creative director is known not just for capturing faces but for constructing narratives. And with every frame, he’s redefining how Africa sees itself, and how the world sees Africa.

As the founder and creative force behind Laceup Media, Asante blends fashion, portraiture, and branding with a cinematic edge that feels both contemporary and timeless. His images; bold, composed, and deeply evocative, have graced the covers of major campaigns and profiles of cultural icons across Africa. Whether he’s shooting a global celebrity or an emerging voice, Asante applies the same commitment: to reflect authenticity, dignity, and distinction.

His journey into photography was unconventional. Trained as a telecommunications engineer, Asante’s creative pivot began when he struggled to find quality visuals for the websites he was designing. Instead of outsourcing, he picked up the camera himself and never looked back. What began as necessity quickly evolved into vision, launching a career that would eventually span editorials, high-end campaigns, and immersive digital media.

Today, his lens has captured celebrated figures such as Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, actress and seasoned emcee Anita Erskine, Ghana Boxing Legend Azumah Nelson, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, Joselyn Dumas, Lydia Forson, Temi Otedola, Jackie Appiah, Cardi B and Rosa Whitaker. His commercial portfolio includes work for international brands like Nestlé, Vodafone, Nivea, Guinness, and Barclays, executed with a level of art direction and precision that rivals any global studio. Twice named Fashion Photographer of the Year at Ghana’s Glitz Style Awards, Asante has also been featured by The Culture Trip and 500px, and exhibited work internationally.

But Asante’s mission extends beyond visual impact. He’s building systems. Through Laceup Media, he’s cultivating a creative ecosystem that supports emerging talent while delivering best-in-class productions. His studio is a training ground, a think tank, and a production powerhouse all in one, positioned to lead Africa’s visual renaissance on its own terms.

What makes Gilbert Asante exceptional isn’t just technical mastery, it’s vision. He understands that visuals are currency in the digital age. They shape identity, influence aspiration, and define legacy. In every shoot, he’s asking a larger question: What does power look like when told through an African lens?

With a signature style that’s sharp yet soulful, and a mindset firmly fixed on innovation, Gilbert Asante is doing more than documenting a moment, he’s crafting the visual blueprint for a confident, creative, and future-forward continent.
