Florence Otedola Redefining African Music and Philanthropy on a Global Stage

Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, professionally known as DJ Cuppy, has become one of Africa’s most influential music figures, combining artistry, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy to create a lasting impact. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, and of Jamaican descent, she has used her platform to elevate African music, empower young creatives, and champion social causes across the continent.

Cuppy began her career in 2013, quickly establishing herself as a sought-after disc jockey and music producer. Known for her versatility and global sensibility, she has released tracks such as Gelato and Green Light, and her music blends Afrobeats with electronic and international sounds. She has performed at major global events, including Glastonbury Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, and other high-profile cultural and brand events, demonstrating her ability to bridge African music with international audiences.

Beyond performance, Cuppy has used her expertise and entrepreneurial spirit to create Red Velvet Music Group, a London-based music management and content production company. The platform supports African artists and projects, providing the infrastructure and guidance necessary for creators to thrive in competitive markets. Her work has positioned her as not only a performer but also a facilitator of growth for emerging talent across the continent.

Education has been central to her journey. Cuppy earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics from King’s College London and completed a Master’s degree in African Studies at the University of Oxford in 2022, demonstrating her commitment to intellectual rigor and understanding of the broader African socio-economic landscape.

Cuppy is equally distinguished for her philanthropic work. She founded The Cuppy Foundation, an initiative focused on education, youth empowerment, and child welfare. Through the foundation, she has created scholarship funds, supported displaced and vulnerable children, and implemented programs that address social inequities. In 2023, she was recognised with the Philanthropic Endeavour Leadership Award at the Best of Africa Awards for her impactful contributions to society.

Her influence extends to global advocacy. In 2023, she became the first international celebrity ambassador for The King’s Trust, a charity associated with King Charles III, promoting youth empowerment and social equity. She also played a key role at the United Nations General Assembly in 2024, moderating the opening session on sustainable development and youth leadership, and performing at related events, further cementing her status as a global ambassador for African talent.

DJ Cuppy’s career exemplifies how creativity, education, and strategic influence can converge to redefine African music and social impact. She has shown that artists can thrive while also driving meaningful change in their communities. Through performance, management, and philanthropy, she continues to inspire a generation of African creatives, setting a standard for excellence, leadership, and global relevance.

Florence Otedola’s journey reflects a broader narrative of African leadership in culture and social development. With her artistry, advocacy, and entrepreneurial acumen, she demonstrates that African talent can lead, innovate, and make an enduring mark on the world stage.
