FG Launches Nutrition 774 Strategic Board to Tackle Malnutrition Nationwide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated the Strategic Board for the Nutrition 774 Initiative, marking a significant step in its ongoing efforts to combat malnutrition across all 774 local government areas. The board was officially launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima on June 21, 2025, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Nutrition 774 Initiative is designed to coordinate and consolidate interventions across various sectors and levels of government, avoiding duplication of efforts while enhancing impact. The new strategic board will oversee implementation, ensuring a harmonized approach that aligns with national health, economic planning, and social development goals.

This initiative forms part of the broader nutrition governance structure under the ANRiN 2.0 framework. It involves multiple ministries, including Health, Budget and Economic Planning, and Women Affairs, each responsible for institutionalizing nutrition priorities within their mandates.

The Federal Government is encouraging state governors and local government chairmen to lead efforts at the grassroots level. In addition, the National Assembly has pledged legislative support, including measures to improve maternity leave policies, reform food taxation, and strengthen institutional frameworks that support nutrition outcomes.

From an economic standpoint, the Nutrition 774 Initiative is expected to boost long-term productivity and reduce healthcare costs by addressing malnutrition, an issue that directly affects workforce capacity, education outcomes, and economic participation. By improving human capital, the programme supports the administration’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes youth and women empowerment, poverty alleviation, and national development.

The next phase of the initiative will focus on local implementation, the creation of specialized nutrition units at federal and state levels, and the mobilization of domestic funding, including through the proposed Child Nutrition Fund. Collaboration with development partners such as the World Bank, UNICEF, and civil society groups is also expected to play a key role in ensuring measurable results.

For the private sector, this development signals potential investment and partnership opportunities in healthcare delivery, education, logistics, and nutrition-focused products and services.
