Eni and partners approve major new expansion for Ivory Coast energy project

Eni and its partners have approved a new development phase for the Baleine offshore project in Ivory Coast, marking another major milestone for one of Africa’s fastest-growing energy developments. The approval covers the third phase of the Baleine project, the largest hydrocarbon discovery ever made in Ivory Coast, according to Reuters and MyJoyOnline.

The project, developed alongside Petroci and Vitol, is expected to significantly increase production capacity. Oil output is projected to rise from 60,000 barrels per day to 150,000 barrels per day, while gas production is expected to grow from 80 million cubic feet per day to 200 million cubic feet daily.

The expansion includes the construction of a new floating production, storage, and offloading vessel designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Eni said all gas produced from the project will be directed toward Ivory Coast’s domestic market to support electricity generation and industrial growth.

Energy analysts say the Baleine development is helping position Ivory Coast as an emerging offshore energy hub in West Africa at a time when African producers are seeking to strengthen local energy security while expanding export revenues. Industry observers also note that the project reflects continued international investment interest in African oil and gas assets despite the global transition toward cleaner energy systems.
