Egypt’s Enany Poised to Lead UNESCO Despite Criticism of Heritage Record at Home

Egypt’s former antiquities minister Khaled El-Enany is set to become the next Director-General of UNESCO, marking a major diplomatic victory for Cairo even as critics question his record on cultural heritage protection.

El-Enany, who previously oversaw the unveiling of major archaeological projects including the Grand Egyptian Museum, emerged as the frontrunner after securing broad support among African, Arab, and European nations, according to Bloomberg. His appointment is expected to be formally confirmed during the upcoming UNESCO General Conference in Paris.

While Egyptian officials have hailed his expected leadership as a win for African representation in global cultural governance, rights groups and some heritage experts have criticized his tenure. Reports from France 24 noted concerns over the handling of restoration projects and alleged political influence in cultural management during his ministry.

El-Enany has defended his record, emphasizing Egypt’s efforts to repatriate thousands of looted antiquities and expand museum accessibility. “Our work was always about preserving history for all humanity, not just for Egypt,” he said in a previous interview cited by Al-Ahram.

If confirmed, El-Enany would be the first Egyptian to head UNESCO, a development analysts say could strengthen Africa’s voice in global debates on culture, education, and heritage preservation.
