Egypt Opens Colossal New Antiquities Museum After Two-Decade Wait

Egypt has officially opened the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids, marking the culmination of more than twenty years of planning and construction. The opening ceremony, held on Thursday, drew world leaders, dignitaries, and cultural figures in a celebration of one of the most ambitious museum projects in modern history.

According to Bloomberg and Reuters, the $1 billion facility spans nearly half a million square meters and houses over 100,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures displayed together for the first time. The museum is designed to serve as a global hub for Egyptology, tourism, and cultural diplomacy.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa said the project underscores Egypt’s commitment to preserving its heritage and revitalizing tourism, which contributes about 12% to the nation’s GDP. “This museum represents the heart of our cultural identity and a bridge between our past and future,” Issa stated during the opening ceremony.

Construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum began in 2002 but faced multiple delays due to political unrest, funding challenges, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Its opening marks a new chapter for Egypt’s cultural sector, with officials expecting a surge in international visitors over the coming months.
