China Approves ₦40 Billion Grant to Accelerate Nigeria’s Development Projects

China has approved a RMB200 million grant, worth about ₦40.3 billion, to support Nigeria’s economic development and the implementation of projects jointly agreed by the two governments, according to ChannelsTv. Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai announced the grant during a meeting with Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, in Abuja.

The funding forms part of Beijing’s broader economic cooperation with Abuja and follows commitments reached by the two countries’ leaders, including outcomes from the 2024 Forum on China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit. Ambassador Yu said China and Nigeria would continue coordinating to ensure that bilateral cooperation delivers tangible benefits for citizens and supports Nigeria’s national development priorities.

The grant could strengthen financing for infrastructure and other development projects while deepening an economic relationship that already spans trade, manufacturing, energy, telecommunications and transport. China’s Ministry of Commerce said a bilateral economic partnership framework signed in March 2026 is intended to support Nigerian manufacturing, agricultural transformation, investment and integration into global markets.

For businesses and investors, the new grant reinforces China’s strategic role in Nigeria’s development financing and could create opportunities for Chinese and Nigerian companies involved in project delivery. The impact will ultimately depend on which projects receive the funding, how quickly they are implemented and whether the cooperation translates into productive capacity, jobs and stronger trade links between both economies.
