Burkina Faso Hits Record 94 Tonnes of Gold Output as Mining Reforms Gain Traction

Burkina Faso achieved a record 94 tonnes of gold production in 2025, marking the highest annual output in the country’s history. The surge reflects the impact of ongoing mining sector reforms and tighter oversight of industrial and artisanal operations, Business Insider Africa reported.

The total represents an increase of more than 30 tonnes compared with 2024, with artisanal mining contributing roughly 42 tonnes. Government measures to curb illegal gold trade and strengthen supervision of the country’s 15 industrial mines were cited as key drivers of the growth, according to details from the Energy, Mines and Quarries Ministry.

Officials also highlighted the role of the state-owned Burkina Faso Mining Participation Company (SOPAMIB) in boosting local participation and oversight. Beyond gold production, authorities noted expansion in infrastructure, including electricity connections for nearly 160,000 households and extensions to the national transmission network, based on information presented by the ministry.

Looking ahead, the ministry plans further reforms in 2026, including restructuring the Bureau of Mines and Geology and formalizing artisanal mining into cooperatives. Officials said the focus remains on deepening mining sovereignty, enhancing local participation, and supporting sustainable growth in the sector, APA News reported.
