Airtel Africa Names Gopal Vittal as New Chairman to Succeed Mittal

Airtel Africa has announced a leadership transition at its board level, with Gopal Vittal set to take over as chairman from longtime telecom industry leader Sunil Mittal in July 2026, the company said in a statement to shareholders, as highlighted by Reuters.

Vittal, who currently serves as a non‑executive director on the Airtel Africa board and as Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel, brings extensive industry experience to the role and is expected to lead the company’s strategic direction across its 14 African markets.

The board also confirmed that Shravin Bharti Mittal will assume the position of deputy chair, providing continuity and supporting the governance transition ahead of the group’s upcoming annual general meeting.

The change reflects a planned succession that aligns with Airtel Africa’s ongoing objectives to strengthen leadership and build on recent growth in telecom and digital services across the continent.
