Africa’s Top 5 Airlines Powering Regional and Global Connectivity in 2025

Africa’s aviation industry is experiencing steady growth in 2025, driven by strong passenger demand, expanding fleets, and a renewed focus on reliability and global alliances. 

As travel rebounds across the continent, five major airlines have emerged as the backbone of Africa’s air connectivity, combining scale, strategic expansion, and service quality to lead the market.

1. Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines remains the continent’s largest and most expansive carrier. According to the airline’s official data, it operates a fleet of over 155 aircraft and serves more than 160 destinations globally. In 2025, it launched a $50 million domestic terminal at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, furthering its Vision 2035 plan aimed at fleet expansion and enhanced international connectivity.

2. EgyptAir

EgyptAir follows with a fleet of around 78 aircraft serving over 100 destinations. According to ch-aviation, the airline recently added Boeing 737-8 aircraft to its fleet. As a member of Star Alliance, EgyptAir benefits from extended global reach, particularly across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

3. Air Algérie

Air Algérie ranks third, with approximately 56 aircraft flying to nearly 80 destinations across 28 countries. According to Airfleets.net, the airline has increased regional frequencies in alignment with Algeria’s national strategy to boost trade and travel links across Africa.

4. Royal Air Maroc

Royal Air Maroc maintains a significant role as Morocco’s national airline. With a fleet of about 52 aircraft serving close to 90 destinations, it continues to grow its international network. According to Planespotters.net, the airline is expanding its long-haul operations as part of Morocco’s broader aviation development plan. Its membership in the Oneworld alliance enhances connectivity between Africa, Europe, and North America.

5. Kenya Airways

Kenya Airways completes the list with a fleet of 34 aircraft flying to 44 destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. According to the airline’s 2025 fleet report, it is focusing on cargo logistics and route optimization. Despite ongoing financial restructuring, reported by Reuters in May 2025, the airline remains a key player in East African connectivity and is supported by its SkyTeam alliance membership.

Together, these five airlines represent the core of Africa’s aviation strength in 2025, each contributing to improved connectivity, service quality, and global competitiveness in a rapidly evolving travel landscape.
