Mali Shares $33 Million in Gold Revenue with Communities as New Mining Code Takes Effect

Mali has distributed $33 million in gold mining revenues to local communities, marking a major step in implementing the country’s revised mining code aimed at ensuring that regions hosting mining operations receive a greater share of resource wealth, as reported by Reuters.

The payment is part of reforms introduced under Mali’s 2023 mining code, which requires mining companies to allocate a portion of their revenues to community development funds. These funds are designed to finance projects such as infrastructure, schools, health services, and other social initiatives in areas directly affected by mining activities.

Mali is one of Africa’s largest gold producers, with major operations run by international firms including Barrick Gold, B2Gold, Resolute Mining, and Endeavour Mining. AllAfrica says the new legislation strengthens state oversight while ensuring that mining revenues contribute more directly to national and local economic development.

Mining.com noted that the revenue-sharing initiative is intended to reduce tensions between mining companies and host communities while promoting inclusive growth. By channeling mining income into local development projects, Mali hopes to ensure that its vast mineral resources translate into tangible benefits for communities across the country.
