Afentra plans new Angola exploration drilling campaign by 2027

Afentra is targeting new exploration wells offshore Angola by 2027 as the company expands its footprint in one of Africa’s leading oil-producing nations. Company executives outlined the plans during investor updates and energy sector discussions, according to Reuters.

Afentra has been increasing its exposure to Angolan energy assets through acquisitions and partnerships linked to mature offshore oil blocks previously operated by international majors. The company said upcoming exploration activities are expected to focus on unlocking additional reserves and extending production life across key offshore acreage.

Angola remains one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest crude oil exporters and has intensified efforts to attract fresh upstream investment as it seeks to offset declining production from ageing fields. The government has introduced licensing reforms, tax incentives, and investment-friendly policies aimed at reviving exploration activity and boosting long-term output capacity.

Energy analysts say renewed drilling interest from independent operators such as Afentra reflects growing confidence in Angola’s offshore sector despite global energy transition pressures. They note that African oil producers continue to position natural resources as critical to economic growth, export revenues, and energy security while balancing increasing international focus on cleaner energy investments.
