Ghana’s Gold Output Hits Record 6 Million Ounces in 2025, Industry Group Says

Ghana achieved a record gold production of 6 million ounces in 2025, driven largely by growth in artisanal and small-scale mining, the Ghana Chamber of Mines reported. The milestone cements Ghana’s position as one of the world’s leading gold producers, according to Reuters.

Large-scale mines contributed approximately 2.9 million ounces, roughly matching 2024 levels, while artisanal and small-scale miners accounted for around 3.1 million ounces. Industry officials attributed the surge to regulatory reforms that strengthened formal production channels and reduced smuggling, as well as continued strong global gold prices.

Looking ahead, the Chamber of Mines cautioned that Ghana’s projected output of 6.5 million ounces in 2026 could be affected by proposed changes to the mineral royalty regime. The government plans to replace the fixed royalty rate with a sliding scale linked to gold prices, intended to increase state revenues. Mining companies, however, warn that the change may deter investment and delay new projects.

Stable output from major operations, including Shandong Mining’s Cardinal Namdini and Newmont’s Ahafo North, combined with steady artisanal contributions, underpinned the record production, as reported by MyJoyOnline. While 2025 was a strong year, officials stressed that sustaining growth will depend on policy stability and investment in new and existing mines.
