Botswana to Open Embassy in Moscow, Seeks Deeper Cooperation with Russia on Rare Earths and Diamonds

Botswana plans to open an embassy in Moscow as it seeks to expand diplomatic and economic engagement with Russia, including cooperation in rare earth minerals and the diamond sector, the country’s foreign minister has said. The move signals a strategic effort by the southern African nation to diversify partnerships and attract investment into key resource industries.

Speaking to Russia’s TASS news agency, Foreign Minister Phenyo Butale said Botswana was inviting Russian companies to explore opportunities in rare earths and diamonds, sectors seen as critical to future economic growth. He described Botswana as politically stable and open to mutually beneficial cooperation, noting that the government is keen to deepen ties beyond traditional partners.

Diamonds remain the backbone of Botswana’s economy, accounting for roughly a third of government revenue and the majority of foreign exchange earnings, as highlighted by industry analysts and trade officials. Interest in rare earth minerals also reflects Botswana’s ambition to position itself within global supply chains linked to advanced manufacturing, clean energy and digital technologies.

Reuters reports that the planned embassy opening forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen bilateral relations while supporting long-term growth through resource development. Officials say the outreach to Russia complements Botswana’s wider engagement with global partners as it seeks to balance diplomacy with economic opportunity in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
