Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the tech giant, is supporting a multi‑country project aimed at digitizing and safeguarding 15 million public records across Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. According to a statement from Google.org, the initiative seeks to improve access to critical information for citizens while enhancing governmental transparency.
The project, in partnership with local civil society organisations and government agencies, focuses on key public records including birth certificates, land titles, and corporate registrations. Bloomberg Africa reported that this effort is part of a broader push to modernise administrative systems and strengthen data resilience in the region.
Officials involved in the project said the programme will leverage cloud-based technologies to ensure records are securely stored and easily retrievable. Reuters highlighted that the initiative also aims to build local capacity through training programmes for civil servants in digital records management.
