Nigeria’s Dangote Fertilizer to Expand Urea Output with Thyssenkrupp Technology

Dangote Fertiliser Limited has announced plans to expand its urea production capacity through a new collaboration with Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Uhde, in a move aimed at boosting Nigeria’s position as Africa’s leading fertiliser producer and exporter.

According to Business Insider Africa, the expansion project will deploy Thyssenkrupp’s advanced ammonia and urea production technology to enhance efficiency and output at Dangote’s existing facility in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos. The plant currently produces 3 million metric tonnes of urea annually, making it the largest granulated urea fertiliser plant in Africa.

A company spokesperson stated that the expansion will help “meet growing domestic demand and strengthen Nigeria’s export competitiveness across global markets.” The project is expected to create hundreds of technical and engineering jobs while contributing significantly to Nigeria’s non-oil revenue base.

Thyssenkrupp, in a statement cited by Reuters, confirmed its commitment to providing sustainable technology solutions that align with global environmental standards, noting that the project will also improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in fertiliser production.

The expansion underscores the Dangote Group’s broader industrial strategy, which includes diversification into energy, petrochemicals, and infrastructure development, positioning Nigeria as a key hub for agro-industrial innovation in Africa.
