Nigeria’s telecommunications industry continues its growth trajectory, with total active subscribers reaching 173.5 million as broadband penetration climbed to 49.3% in September 2025, according to new data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The latest figures reflect a 4.2% increase in active subscriptions from the same period in 2024, driven by rising mobile connectivity, expanded rural coverage, and ongoing 5G network rollouts. The NCC noted that broadband subscriptions surpassed 96.8 million, highlighting significant progress toward the country’s 70% broadband penetration target by 2027.
Industry analysts cited by BusinessDay said the continued rise in digital access underscores Nigeria’s growing dependence on mobile internet for business, education, and financial services. “The broadband expansion is not only driving economic inclusion but also supporting the government’s digital transformation goals,” said Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC.
As reported by Reuters, major network operators such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel Africa, and Globacom have invested heavily in infrastructure upgrades and spectrum acquisitions, contributing to improved network quality and faster connectivity. The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to deepening broadband coverage nationwide and reducing the cost of internet access for consumers and businesses.
