Mali Revokes Over 90 Mining Exploration Permits for Non-Compliance

Mali’s government has revoked more than 90 mining exploration permits after companies failed to meet regulatory and operational obligations, the Ministry of Mines announced, signaling a major tightening of oversight in one of Africa’s top gold-producing nations.

According to Reuters, the decision follows a nationwide audit of exploration licenses aimed at improving transparency and ensuring that mining concessions are used productively. The ministry said that the cancellations primarily affected dormant or inactive projects that had not demonstrated progress in exploration or investment commitments.

The government is committed to ensuring that Mali’s mineral wealth benefits the country and its citizens,” Mines Minister Amadou Keita said in a statement carried by Bloomberg. He added that new tenders will be opened for eligible investors once the revoked permits are fully reclassified.

As reported by Mining Weekly, the move comes as Mali’s ruling military government seeks to boost domestic control over natural resources and attract compliant investors amid rising global demand for gold and lithium. Analysts say the revocations could reshape the country’s mining landscape, creating opportunities for new entrants aligned with stricter state policies.
