Tinubu Urges New INEC Chairman to Safeguard Nigeria’s Electoral Integrity

President Bola Tinubu has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and ensure that future elections are free, fair and credible. The call was made during Amupitan’s swearing-in ceremony at the State House in Abuja on October 23, as reported by State House Nigeria.

Tinubu commended the progress of Nigeria’s democratic process over the past 25 years and emphasized that the credibility of elections must remain non-negotiable. He pointed to the upcoming November 8 governorship election in Anambra State as a key opportunity for the new INEC leadership to demonstrate transparency, professionalism and public accountability.

“Every stage of the electoral process, from registration to collation, must be conducted with utmost transparency and respect for the will of the people,” the President said, according to Vanguard Nigeria.

In his response, Amupitan pledged to restore public trust in INEC through stakeholder engagement and institutional reforms. He reaffirmed his commitment to conducting elections that genuinely reflect the choice of Nigerian voters, describing the assignment as “a sacred national duty.”

Tinubu also tasked the commission with strengthening its institutional capacity to withstand political and logistical challenges. “No electoral system is perfect,” he noted, “but we must ensure ours remains robust, resilient and immune to manipulation.”
