Former Speaker Herminie Wins Seychelles Presidential Election

Patrick Herminie, former Speaker of the National Assembly, has won the Seychelles presidential election with 52.7 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan, as reported by Reuters. The victory returns the United Seychelles Party to power after five years in opposition, marking a significant political shift in the island nation’s governance.

Herminie, who previously served as Speaker from 2007 to 2016, campaigned on an anti-corruption platform and promised to address inequality, unemployment, and the rising cost of living. He pledged to cancel a controversial hotel project on a coral atoll and to implement recommendations from the Truth, Reconciliation and National Unity Commission, Al Jazeera reported.

Speaking shortly after his victory, Herminie told supporters in Victoria, “The people have spoken, and they have chosen a new path for Seychelles. Our priority is to unite the nation and restore integrity in government.” His administration also plans to lower the retirement age from 65 to 63 and strengthen social welfare programs.

Political analysts say the incoming government faces immediate challenges, including rebuilding confidence in tourism, tackling youth unemployment, and managing climate adaptation efforts in the small island economy. Observers note that while the election outcome reflects public desire for change, Herminie’s ability to deliver tangible progress will be key to sustaining public support.
