Patrick Bitature: Building Business, Philanthropy, and Opportunity Across Uganda

Patrick Bitature has long been a defining figure in Uganda’s business ecosystem. As the founder and Group CEO of Simba Group, he has grown a sprawling enterprise that touches telecoms, hospitality, energy, real estate, agriculture, mining, and media. But perhaps more telling than the scale of his business is how he weds entrepreneurship with purposeful leadership and social investment, shaping not only profits but people.

Born on May 10, 1960, in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, Bitature was the eldest of several children in a family that valued education and community. When he was just 13 years old, his life took a tragic turn: his father was murdered during the Idi Amin regime, leaving young Patrick to contribute early to family welfare. According to his biography, he began trading sugar between Kenya and Uganda, laying early stones on a path that would lead to business risk, perseverance, and growth. Bitature attended Namasagali College for his O-Levels, Nyakasura School for A-Levels, and later studied at the London School of Accountancy. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

His business journey began in earnest in 1998 with the establishment of Simba Telecom with his wife Carol. Simba Telecom became a franchisee for MTN Uganda, and by many accounts the business grew quickly to become the largest seller of MTN airtime in Uganda by the early 2010s. Over time he expanded, founding and growing other Simba Group companies, including properties like Protea Hotels by Marriott, energy operations such as the Tororo thermal power station (Electromaxx), solar power, agribusiness, mining, and media. As reported by the Simba Group site, his companies now span several East African countries, serving thousands of employees directly and indirectly.

Recognition for Bitature has followed his achievements. In November 2022 he was named Entrepreneur of the Year at the African Tourism Leadership Forum held in Botswana, in acknowledgment of his “tremendous entrepreneurship impact” in Africa’s hospitality industry. According to Watchdog Uganda, that award highlighted the performance of his hospitality assets, particularly Protea Hotel Kampala Skyz and its contribution to Uganda’s meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions sector. He was also appointed Chancellor of Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) in September 2021, according to both the university and national press, lending his influence to education and youth development.

Beyond business, Bitature has invested significant resources through social impact structures. He co-founded the Patrick & Carol Bitature Foundation, which leads Project 500k, a youth-focused skills and entrepreneurship initiative designed to reach half a million Ugandans. According to the foundation’s reports, this effort emphasizes financial literacy, mentorship, and job readiness. He also sits on boards including Umeme Limited, Uganda’s main electricity distributor, and chairs others such as Bolloré Transport & Logistics Uganda and the Uganda Tourism Board Steering Committee.

What stands out about Bitature is his resilience and capacity to build across sectors without narrowing his vision. From humble beginnings and personal tragedy he has consistently sought not just to grow business but to influence systems: in energy, in connectivity, in hospitality and in youth empowerment. His belief that opportunity can be created through enterprise is evident in how he leverages both private investment and philanthropic effort to support Uganda’s economic and social advancement.
