Temwani Simwaka: Driving Digital Growth and Financial Inclusion in Malawi

Temwani Simwaka is not just stepping into a role, she is stepping into history. As the first woman to lead NBS Bank plc, she brings a blend of financial expertise, digital vision, and people-centered leadership to one of Malawi’s most established financial institutions. Her story is one of persistence and transformation, marked by years of steering complex projects and driving innovation that has already reshaped the way Malawians interact with banking.

With more than 25 years of experience in financial services, Simwaka has been at the heart of NBS Bank’s transformation. She led the migration to a modern core banking system that improved efficiency and positioned the bank to compete more effectively in the digital era. She also spearheaded the establishment of the bank’s Forex Bureau, which achieved profitability in its first year, and invested heavily in talent development and succession planning, ensuring a strong pipeline of future leaders.

Her academic and professional credentials reflect her depth of expertise. She is a Certified Public Accountant, a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy, and earned a Diploma in Business Studies from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences. Beyond the bank, she has contributed to national development by serving on several boards and institutions.

Under her leadership, NBS Bank has delivered record results. In 2024 the bank reported a 148 percent rise in profit after tax, driven by growth in customer deposits, an expanded loan book, and rising adoption of digital services. Non-performing loans were brought under tighter control, while the launch of digital lending platforms allowed customers to access salary-backed loans in minutes without visiting a branch. These innovations have extended financial access to communities that previously had little or no branch coverage.

Simwaka has also distinguished herself as a mentor and advocate for inclusion. She has been recognized for supporting women in leadership, promoting girl-child education, and advancing equity in financial services. Her efforts have earned her recognition at platforms such as the Wealth Woman Summit, underscoring her commitment to ensuring that progress in the banking sector translates into broader social impact.

Temwani Simwaka now leads NBS Bank at a pivotal moment for Malawi’s economy. Her blend of technical expertise, digital innovation, and community orientation is positioning the bank to grow beyond profits and to become a driver of empowerment across the country. She is showing that modern banking in Africa can be both high-performing and people-centered.
