Ogun Govt, Gbenga Daniel Clash Again Over Road Reconstruction Plans

The Ogun State Government and former governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, have reignited their long-running dispute over road reconstruction in Ijebu-Ode, with both sides trading blame over stalled projects.

The confrontation resurfaced after the state government announced it would press ahead with rehabilitating key roads in Daniel’s senatorial district, a move the ex-governor described as politically motivated. Local media reports carried by Punch noted that Daniel accused the government of neglecting infrastructure in the area during his tenure in the Senate, only to suddenly revive projects for partisan reasons.

In response, the Ogun State Ministry of Works insisted that the reconstruction efforts form part of a wider infrastructure development plan and are not targeted at any political figure. A senior official, cited by The Guardian Nigeria, stressed that the state “remains committed to delivering quality roads for the people, regardless of political affiliations.”

Analysts speaking to Vanguard suggested that the renewed clash reflects deeper political rivalries ahead of the 2027 elections, with infrastructure projects becoming flashpoints for influence in the region.

The roads in question connect major markets and residential areas, and residents say the delays have hurt businesses and daily commuting. Civil society groups are now urging both sides to set aside political differences to ensure the projects are completed.
