Femi Olayebi: Stitching Nigeria’s Leather Dreams Into Global Luxury

In an industry long dominated by European houses and heritage brands, Femi Olayebi stands tall as one of Africa’s most distinct voices in luxury leather craftsmanship. What began as a personal need, a handmade diaper bag, evolved into FemiHandbags, one of Nigeria’s most recognizable leather brands, and an ecosystem of opportunity for the next generation of African artisans.

A French linguist by training, Femi’s pivot into handbag design wasn’t part of the original plan. Yet through resourcefulness, intuition, and a deep respect for quality, she taught herself the ropes of leatherwork and production, slowly carving out a niche in an emerging market that had no blueprint for high-end African-made accessories.

Over the years, she scaled her business into two thriving arms: FemiHandbags, offering elegant, handcrafted statement pieces, and My World of Bags, which serves the corporate market with conference totes, tech cases, and branded accessories. This dual strategy positioned her brand for both prestige and sustainability.

But Olayebi’s most powerful impact lies beyond her own studio. In 2017, she founded the Lagos Leather Fair (LLF), Nigeria’s first and most influential platform dedicated to showcasing the potential of local leather. The annual event convenes designers, tanners, manufacturers, and investors, advocating for a formalized value chain that supports local production and global competitiveness.

Her passion for industry-building didn’t stop there. Through the Kafawa Training Programme, supported by the Mastercard Foundation, Femi is training a new generation of young Nigerians in the art and business of leathercraft, equipping them with not only skills, but vision.

Internationally, she has represented Nigeria on major platforms, from trade shows in Milan and London to SheTrades events in New York. Her work has caught the attention of global buyers, development partners, and luxury enthusiasts who are increasingly drawn to the authenticity and innovation found in African design.

Accolades include fellowships from Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Women Program, the MIT Legatum Center, and multiple recognition awards for entrepreneurship and creative leadership.

Today, Femi Olayebi is not just a brand, she’s a movement. Her belief that Nigerian leather can rival global labels is no longer a distant dream; it’s a reality stitched with precision, patience, and purpose.
