Apple Overtakes Nvidia to Become World’s Most Valuable Company as AI Spending Concerns Reshape Markets

Apple has reclaimed its position as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company, overtaking Nvidia after a broad technology sell-off on Friday, October 30, 2026. Apple closed with a market capitalisation of approximately $5.03 trillion, despite its shares falling 1.2 per cent, while Nvidia’s valuation declined to $4.93 trillion following a 4.2 per cent drop in its share price. According to Bloomberg, this marks the first time Apple has moved ahead of Nvidia since briefly taking the lead in July, reflecting a shift in investor sentiment as markets reassess the scale and commercial returns of artificial intelligence investment.

The change in market leadership comes amid growing concerns over the enormous capital expenditure commitments being made by major technology companies to build AI infrastructure. Disappointing financial updates from Intel and Amazon, following earlier results from Alphabet and Meta, intensified investor caution about whether the spending on data centres, chips and computing capacity will generate sufficient returns. Nvidia, whose graphics processing units have become central to the global AI infrastructure boom, has faced increased scrutiny as investors weigh the sustainability of demand against the rising cost of expansion. Apple, by contrast, has maintained a more restrained capital expenditure strategy, supported by its established hardware ecosystem, services business and substantial cash generation. Its shares have gained approximately 27 per cent in 2026, outperforming other members of the Magnificent Seven technology group.

Apple’s return to the top spot highlights a changing investment narrative within the global technology industry, where investors are increasingly examining profitability, cash flow and the long-term commercial value of AI alongside growth potential. Bloomberg estimates that Apple’s free cash flow could rise 38 per cent to $142 billion in fiscal 2026, which ended on September 30. The company’s ability to generate substantial cash from its established business lines has provided a point of contrast with technology peers committing increasingly large sums to AI infrastructure. Nvidia remains a central supplier to the AI economy, and the latest ranking shift does not diminish its position in the semiconductor industry. However, the changing market valuations illustrate how quickly investor priorities can reshape the hierarchy of the world’s largest technology companies.
