Rwanda To Host Formula 1 Grand Prix, Targeting Historic African Return in 2030

Rwanda is poised to bring Formula 1 racing back to Africa after more than three decades, with reports indicating that the country has secured an agreement to host a Grand Prix from 2030. According to Reuters and AFP, sources within the Rwandan government and close to the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), confirmed on October 8 that Rwanda’s bid had received approval, although a formal announcement from Formula 1 and the FIA was still pending. The reported agreement would mark the championship’s first race on African soil since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. Rwanda first formally announced its ambition to host a race in December 2024, when President Paul Kagame presented the country’s bid during an FIA gathering in Kigali. The latest development signals significant progress in the country’s effort to establish itself as a destination for major international sporting events.

The proposed Grand Prix is expected to take place on a purpose-built permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport, approximately 40 kilometres from Kigali, according to RacingNews365, whose reporting was subsequently cited by Reuters. The project is associated with WurzDesign, the firm founded by former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz, although construction timelines and the final race configuration have yet to be officially confirmed. Rwanda’s bid has advanced amid competition from other African destinations, particularly South Africa, where organisers have continued to explore opportunities to bring Formula 1 back to the country. Channels Television, reporting via AFP, said an official announcement was expected in Kigali the following week, with Qatar reportedly supporting the project. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has also consistently advocated for Formula 1 to return to Africa, backing Rwanda’s ambitions as part of a wider push for greater representation of the continent on the global motorsport calendar.

For Rwanda, hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix could create opportunities across tourism, hospitality, aviation, infrastructure, sponsorship and international investment. The country has already used major sporting partnerships and international events to strengthen its global profile, including collaborations in football and basketball and its hosting of major cycling competitions. However, the financial demands of building and maintaining a Formula 1-standard circuit, alongside the costs of staging a race, mean the long-term economic benefits will depend on investment, visitor spending, infrastructure delivery and local participation. African Business reported that Rwanda’s reported progress has intensified the contest over which African country will host the sport’s return, while South Africa’s sports minister, Gayton McKenzie, has indicated that his country will continue pursuing its own opportunity. Until Formula 1 and the FIA formally confirm the agreement, the proposed 2030 race remains a reported development rather than an officially finalized addition to the championship calendar.
