5 simple things to know about BRICS and its current agenda

The BRICS group is a powerful bloc of emerging economies that actively works to shift the balance of global economic and political power away from Western dominance.

Here are 5 simple things to know about BRICS and its current agenda:

1. The Name is an Acronym: It originally stood for its founding members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

2. Major Expansion and Global South Representation: The group has expanded significantly to include nations like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia, representing 40% of the global population and a massive share of the world economy. The primary political goal of BRICS is to give developing nations a stronger voice in international affairs. Members advocate for reforming Western-dominated institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

3. Challenging the US Dollar and Alternative Finance: BRICS promotes trade settlements using national currencies instead of relying solely on the U.S. dollar. The group also operates its own financial institution, the New Development Bank (NDB), to fund infrastructure and sustainable development projects

4. Current Agenda and Priorities: Under recent chairmanships, the BRICS agenda focuses heavily on practical cooperation. Key focus areas include AI governance, climate change financing, public health cooperation, and streamlining cross-border payment initiatives like BRICS Pay

5. Why should you care: Because geopolitics does not stay in conference rooms. Its decisions and developments eventually affect the things that directly shape your everyday life, including:

• Currency and exchange rates

• Investments and financial markets

• Fuel and energy prices

• Businesses and trade

• The broader economy
