Tobi Amusan Takes Silver as Masai Russell Wins Inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan finished second in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary, clocking 12.34 seconds to secure the silver medal. Amusan was beaten by United States Olympic champion Masai Russell, who won the title in 12.22 seconds, while the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser completed the podium, ChannelsTv reported.

The result adds another major podium finish to Amusan’s international career and continues her presence among the world’s leading hurdlers. The Nigerian remains the world record holder in the event, having run 12.12 seconds in 2022, while Russell has emerged as one of her strongest rivals in recent seasons.

Russell’s victory also reinforces her remarkable recent form. The American Olympic champion had already won the Diamond League Final 100 metres hurdles in 12.20 seconds just days before the Ultimate Championship, before producing another strong performance in Budapest to claim the inaugural title.

The new championship is designed as a high stakes addition to the athletics calendar, bringing together a concentrated field of the world’s leading athletes with a record $10 million prize pool and $150,000 awarded to individual event winners. Amusan’s silver medal underlines Nigeria’s continued influence in global athletics while Russell’s victory gives the new competition an early headline rivalry that could shape future editions.
