Nigeria Takes Helm of UN Budget Committee With Push for Greater Transparency and Reform

Nigeria has assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, placing the country at the centre of deliberations on the organisation’s budget, financial governance, administration and Human Resources, according to ChannelsTv and Arise News. Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has pledged to use the position to advance greater transparency, accountability and administrative efficiency across the global body.

Ibrahim said Nigeria’s leadership would not be conducted as “business as usual”, arguing that every dollar spent by the UN must be properly accounted for and deliver tangible value to its 193 member states. The Fifth Committee is responsible for examining the UN’s financial and administrative affairs, including programme budgets, staffing, institutional efficiency, oversight and the resources required to implement mandates approved by the General Assembly.

A key area of attention will be the structure of the UN Secretariat, particularly what Ibrahim described as a concentration of personnel at senior levels that could limit opportunities for new positions within the organisation. He also identified the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, which has assets of about $110 billion, as an area requiring careful scrutiny as part of the broader reform agenda.

Nigeria’s chairmanship comes as the UN confronts growing pressure over financial sustainability, administrative efficiency and the cost of delivering increasingly complex peace, development and humanitarian mandates. The committee is also preparing for its 81st session, including consideration of the proposed UN programme budget for 2027. Nigeria’s approach could therefore give the country a significant platform to influence global financial governance while demonstrating stronger African participation in shaping the efficiency and accountability of the multilateral system.
