Meet Hakeem Effects The Special Effects Visionary Transforming Nollywood One Character at a Time

Hakeem Onilogbo Ajibola, professionally known as Hakeem Effects, is an award-winning Nigerian special effects artist, makeup artist, prosthetics designer, pyrotechnics and visual effects specialist whose work has helped redefine the possibilities of character transformation in Nollywood. As the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tricks International, a special effects and prosthetics company serving the Nigerian film industry, Hakeem has built a career around one fundamental idea: if a story demands the extraordinary, African filmmakers should have the creative and technical capacity to make it believable. His work has consequently placed him among the most recognisable names behind the visual transformation of characters in contemporary Nigerian cinema.

Hakeem’s career began at a time when sophisticated special effects makeup was still relatively uncommon in Nigerian filmmaking. Driven by a fascination with transformation and practical effects, he developed his craft through experimentation, eventually progressing from conventional makeup into prosthetics, creature effects, ageing, injuries, body transformations and other complex visual effects. His breakthrough came through productions including A Soldier’s Story and Oloibiri, the latter earning him his first major industry recognition. In 2016 and 2017, he won Africa’s Best Makeup Artist at the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), establishing him as one of the continent’s leading practitioners in his field. He subsequently won Best Makeup Artist at the 2017 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for Oloibiri. Hakeem himself has described these projects as turning points that brought his work to wider industry attention.

His award-winning run continued as his technical range expanded across major Nigerian productions. At the 2018 AMVCAs, Hakeem again won Best Makeup Artist, giving him consecutive victories at the prestigious awards ceremony and reinforcing his position as one of Nollywood’s most dependable specialists in transformative makeup. His later credits have included major productions such as King of Boys, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, King of Boys: The Return of the King, Anikulapo, Shanty Town and Lisabi. At the 2023 AMVCAs, his work on Shanty Town won Best Makeup, while in 2026, he returned to the winners’ list with Best Makeup for Lisabi: A Legend Is Born. These successive recognitions across different generations of Nollywood productions demonstrate the longevity and adaptability of his craft.

Beyond the trophies, Hakeem’s greatest contribution may be the evolution of special effects as a serious creative discipline within Nigerian cinema. Through Tricks International, he has created effects for productions requiring everything from realistic injuries and ageing to prosthetic transformations and elaborate character designs. His work on films such as King of Boys, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Shanty Town and the Lisabi franchise demonstrates how practical effects can give Nigerian filmmakers greater freedom to tell visually ambitious stories. Rather than treating makeup as simply a finishing touch, Hakeem approaches it as part of the storytelling architecture, using physical transformation to communicate character, emotion, history and identity.

Today, Hakeem Effects represents an important chapter in the technical evolution of Nollywood. His growing collection of AMVCA and AMAA honours, major film credits and pioneering work through Tricks International have established him as a specialist whose influence reaches far beyond the makeup chair. He has helped prove that African cinema can build its own expertise in prosthetics, special effects and practical character transformation while producing work capable of competing for international attention. From his early breakthroughs with A Soldier’s Story and Oloibiri to his more recent recognition for Shanty Town and Lisabi, Hakeem’s career is a testament to the power of technical mastery, imagination and persistence. He is not simply creating makeup; he is helping Nollywood create worlds that audiences can believe in.
