NatWest Reopens US Expansion Drive as UK Banking Rules Loosen

NatWest Group is stepping up its return to the US market after securing approval from the Federal Reserve to establish a representative office in Stamford, Connecticut, as reported by Bloomberg and Financial Times. The move marks the British lender’s first significant push into the US since the financial crisis and follows changes to UK ring fencing rules that removed restrictions on ring fenced banks expanding outside the European Economic Area.

The new office will allow NatWest to market its banking products, strengthen relationships with existing and prospective US customers and support client services. It will not, however, be permitted to take deposits in the US. NatWest already operates a US licensed broker dealer in Stamford that serves institutional clients.

The regulatory shift is part of a broader UK effort to make the banking sector more flexible while preserving protections for retail depositors. The government’s 2026 ring fencing review proposed reforms that could enable banks to provide up to £80 billion in additional business financing, while maintaining the core separation between retail banking and riskier activities.

For NatWest, the US expansion signals a renewed appetite for international growth after years of retrenchment following the 2008 financial crisis. The bank has also strengthened its diversification strategy through its £2.7 billion acquisition of wealth manager Evelyn Partners, suggesting a broader effort to build new revenue streams beyond its traditionally UK focused business.
