Standard Bank Eyes OPay Stake Ahead of Potential US Listing

Standard Bank Group is considering acquiring a stake in Nigerian fintech OPay ahead of a potential US initial public offering that could value the payments company at about $4 billion, according to Bloomberg. The South African banking group is assessing an investment as OPay prepares for a possible listing, giving Standard Bank an opportunity to gain exposure to one of Africa’s fastest growing digital financial platforms.

OPay, which is backed by SoftBank, has grown into one of Nigeria’s leading fintech platforms, serving as many as 50 million users. The company is reportedly preparing for a US listing and has engaged major international banks to advise on the potential transaction, although the timing and size of the IPO have not been finalised.

For Standard Bank, an OPay investment would deepen its exposure to Africa’s rapidly expanding digital payments and financial technology sector. For OPay, bringing in a major African banking group ahead of an international listing could strengthen its institutional investor base and provide additional credibility as it seeks to expand beyond Nigeria.

A successful IPO would also represent a significant milestone for Africa’s fintech industry, giving international investors another route into the continent’s digital financial services market. OPay’s valuation, however, will ultimately depend on market conditions, investor demand and the company’s financial performance when it formally begins the listing process.
